Fibreglass kneeboards — compression-moulded boards with sharper rails, more response and a better ride than plastic. From HO, KD, Raptor, Radar and Test Pilot. Beginner through advanced, mens and womens cuts.
Fibreglass kneeboards are compression-moulded — a fibreglass shell over a lightweight core. The premium kneeboard construction: thinner, lighter, stiffer than roto-moulded plastic. Sharper rails, more responsive on edge, more direct feel from the water. Why fibreglass over plastic. Better ride across the board — more responsive, sharper rails for cleaner turns, often easier deep-water starts because the board is less buoyant and sits closer to the surface during the start. The board does what you tell it. The trade-offs are price (costs more) and durability (doesn’t shrug off rough handling the way plastic does — needs more care storing and transporting). Who fibreglass suits. Anyone past beginner who’s serious about kneeboarding, anyone who wants the better ride and is willing to pay for it, and anyone chasing more advanced tricks where the responsiveness matters. Beginners can absolutely start on fibreglass too — easier starts, sharper feel — provided they’re willing to take a bit more care of the board than they would with plastic. Models by skill level. Beginner: Raptor Misfit, Raptor The Vibe (womens), KD Livewire. Intermediate: HO Joker, KD Mayhem, KD Lil Miss Mayhem (womens), KD River Murray, KD Slayer, KD Quest (womens), Raptor Welcome to the Madhouse (mens, womens pink), Raptor Wild One (womens), Raptor Party Shark, Test Pilot Bounty Chicken. Advanced: Radar Mission, KD Neptune Legacy. Tow hooks. Some fibreglass models include moulded tow hook inserts (KD Slayer is a notable one). If you need the tow hook — particularly for kids or first-time riders — check the product page before buying, because not all fibreglass boards include it. Use a hook handle (shorter, designed to attach to the hook), not a regular ski handle. Care. More care than plastic. Store with a cover, avoid dropping on hard surfaces or against trailer edges, rinse with fresh water after every use, store out of direct sun. The performance comes with a need for respect — treat it like you would a wakeboard or slalom ski. Brand spread: HO, KD (the deepest range across skill levels), Raptor (the Welcome to the Madhouse range is a customer favourite), Radar (Mission for advanced) and Test Pilot.
Construction, ride quality, durability and price. Fibreglass is compression-moulded — thinner, lighter, stiffer, with sharper rails and more response on edge. Often easier starts too, because the board is less buoyant and sits closer to the surface. Plastic is roto-moulded polyethylene — thicker, more buoyant, much more durable, and typically half to a third of the price. Fibreglass is the better-performing construction overall; plastic is the more durable and more affordable construction. Choose based on which trade-off matters most to you.
No — often the opposite. Fibreglass boards are less buoyant, which actually makes deep-water starts easier because the board sits closer to the surface during the pull. They’re sharper through turns, more responsive on edge, and give the rider better feedback from the water. The reason to pick plastic isn’t that fibreglass is harder — it’s that plastic is more durable to rough handling and costs less.
No. Some fibreglass models include a moulded tow hook insert (KD Slayer is a notable one), some don’t. The tow hook makes starts dramatically easier for kids, learners or anyone who struggles to pull themselves up against the rope. If you need it, check the product page before buying — it’ll specify whether the board has an integrated hook. If you’re using the hook for starts, you’ll also need a kneeboard hook handle (shorter, designed to attach to the hook) rather than a regular ski handle.
Treat it like you would a wakeboard or slalom ski. Store with a cover when not in use. Avoid dropping it on hard surfaces or letting it bash against trailer edges. Rinse with fresh water after every use to clear salt and grit. Store out of direct sun. Don’t ride into shallow water or rocks — fibreglass doesn’t shrug off impact damage the way plastic does, and impact damage isn’t covered under manufacturer warranty. Worth the bit of extra care for the ride.
