Choosing a Board Cover or Bag That Fits

A board cover or bag is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a wakeboard, wakesurfer or wakeskate. Impact damage from knocks in the garage, the boat or the back of the car is not covered under manufacturer warranty, so protecting the board between rides matters as much as how you ride it. There are three broad types. Neoprene sleeves are the lightest option — they slip over the board to guard the base and rails from scratches and sit easily in the boat, though most leave the boots exposed to dry. Day covers are a fuller zippered cover, often with a little padding and a storage pocket for rope, towel or sunscreen. Padded travel bags are the most protective, with thicker padding, room for the board with boots mounted, and on some models wheels for moving through an airport or car park. Sizing is by board length, so check your board against the size noted on each cover. A longer board needs a longer bag, and a few centimetres short means it won't close properly. Boards with boots fitted need a bag cut to take the extra height — most padded wakeboard bags allow for this, but slim sleeves often do not. Different disciplines take different covers. Wakeboards, wakesurfers and wakeskates are different shapes, so a wakesurf board wants a wakesurf cover, not a wakeboard bag. Foil boards and kneeboards have their own covers again.
