Getting Changed at the Water

A flat towel is fine at home, but at a boat ramp or a windy beach you want something you can change under. A hooded towel pulls on over your head and covers you to the thighs, so you can peel off a wet vest or wetsuit and get dry without juggling a towel in the wind. A change poncho or robe does the same job with a roomier cut, more room to move and often a front pocket. Material is the main choice. Microfibre towels are light, pack small and dry fast — easy to throw in the boat or a gear bag. Cotton terry is heavier and more absorbent, with a plush feel that suits the beach more than the boat. Both work; it comes down to whether you want fast-drying and packable or soft and absorbent.
