How to Get Up on a Kneeboard: A Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome back to another episode of our "How to" series! Today, we’re focusing on how to get up on a kneeboard, a fun and accessible water sport that anyone in the family can enjoy. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a beginner, this guide will help you master the basics.

What You’ll Need:

  • A kneeboard
  • A tow rope
  • A jet ski or boat to pull you

If your kneeboard has a tow hook, this will make getting up easier. If not, don’t worry—you can still follow these steps without one!

Getting Up with a Tow Hook

  1. Position Yourself on the Board
Start by lying down on your stomach with the kneeboard in the water. Insert the handle into the tow hook if your kneeboard has one. Keep your kneeboard strap loose and positioned above the knee pad for comfort.

  2. Signal the Driver
When you’re ready, give the driver a signal (usually a thumbs-up) and yell “Yep!” to let them know you’re set to go.

  3. Gradual Pull
As the boat or jet ski accelerates slowly, use your knees to shuffle up on the kneeboard. This gradual pull is crucial for beginners or lighter riders, as it prevents jerky movements.

  4. Position Your Hands and Knees
Place your hands on either side of the board, up near the top of the knee pad. This position helps keep the board straight and stable as you move into the kneeling position. Avoid sitting too far back, as this can cause the board to bounce and feel unstable.

  5. Strap In
Once you’ve shuffled your knees into the grooves, pull the strap over your knees. This provides extra security as you ride. Finally, remove the handle from the tow hook and you’re all set!

Getting Up Without a Tow Hook

If your kneeboard doesn’t have a tow hook, the process is slightly different, but still straightforward.

  1. Start on Your Stomach
Begin in the same lying-down position as before, but this time, hold the handle close to the knee pad instead of using a tow hook.

  2. Pull Yourself Up
As the boat or jet ski starts to move, use your knees to wiggle into a ball position. To help with this, pull on the handle slightly to lift yourself up.

  3. Shuffle Forward
Once in the ball position, shuffle your knees up to the front of the board and bring the handle up to chest height. This will give you more control and stability.

  4. Final Position
From here, you’re in a strong, stable kneeling position. Continue to shuffle your knees into the knee pad grooves, and you’re ready to ride!

Final Tips:

  • Stay Forward: Being too far back on the board makes it less stable and can cause bouncing, so keep your weight toward the front.
  • Practice the Pull: Gradual pulls are key to mastering kneeboarding, especially for kids or lighter riders.
