Getting your boat speed right is the single most important factor when you're learning to barefoot water ski. Too slow and you'll sink — too fast and every fall hurts twice as much.
Use the calculator below to find your recommended starting speed based on your body weight. These figures are nominal speeds for novice to intermediate footers, based on coaching and manufacturer data. Once you're on your feet, fine-tune from there — factors like foot size, arch height, water conditions, and experience all play a role.

Nominal starting speed for novice to intermediate footers. Enter your weight to get your recommended boat speed.
Note: Speed increases ~3.5 kph per 10 kg. Adjust for foot size, arch height, experience level, and water conditions. A coach or spotter is strongly recommended when learning.
Slalom ski size is driven by your weight, your boat speed, and your skiing style. As a rough guide: 60–75 kg riders land in the 65–67" range; 75–85 kg riders typically need 66–68"; 85 kg+ usually need 68" or longer. Faster boat speeds run shorter; wide-body skis can shorten the recommendation. Use the calculator above for a specific recommendation.
Faster boat speeds generate more lift, so the ski needs less surface area. At 36 mph (tournament speed) a 75 kg skier might ride a 65" ski; the same skier at 30 mph (social speed) would want 66–67" for the same comfort. That's why the calculator asks for your skiing style first — it's the clearest way to estimate the boat speed you ski at.
When you can comfortably drop one ski mid-run on your combos and ski on the remaining ski. That's the practical signal. Most riders make the move once they can hold a confident edge on one ski for 30 seconds without losing balance. Before then, stay on combos and work on the drop. See our [Combo Ski Size Calculator] if you're still picking your first pair.
