A buoyancy suit is a full wetsuit-style garment with foam panels that provide both thermal protection and buoyancy. Unlike a life vest which straps over clothing, a buoyancy suit is worn as an outer layer that insulates in cold water and keeps you afloat, making it ideal for water skiing and barefoot skiing in cooler conditions.
A buoyancy suit provides flotation and impact protection, but not every suit is a certified lifejacket (PFD). Approval and rating (AS 4758 Level 50 or 50S) vary by product and by state, and requirements differ for towed watersports and for children. Check the rating on the product's tag and listing, and confirm your state's PFD rules before skiing.
Buoyancy suits are sized by chest measurement and height. Measure your chest at its widest point and use the brand's size chart. A snug fit is important — it keeps the suit in position when skiing and ensures the flotation works effectively without riding up on impact.
Buoyancy suits come in youth, women's, and men's fits, plus barefoot-specific models with extra reinforcement in high-impact zones for the demands of barefoot skiing. Cut and styling vary by brand and model — check the individual product listing for who each suit is designed for.
Rinse your buoyancy suit in fresh water after every use, hang to dry in the shade, and store flat or on a wide hanger. Avoid folding the foam panels sharply, which can cause cracking over time. Don't machine dry or leave it in direct sunlight for extended periods.
