Kids life vests — L50 and L50S in 50N buoyancy, sized for infants through teens. From Rip Curl, Follow, Jetpilot, Wing and Ronix. Boys, girls and gender-neutral cuts. AS/NZS-compliant.
Critical: kids must NEVER be fitted into adult-sized vests. An adult vest is too big around a kid’s body, which means it rides up in the water — potentially over the head in a heavy fall — and doesn’t provide effective flotation. Kids need kid-sized vests. No exceptions, no sizing down adult gear. Life vests (or life jackets) are a legal requirement for all towed water sports in Australia — including kids, including infants. Age categorisation (typical — check each product page for the specific weight bracket). Infant — Follow Corp Infant, Jetpilot Cause Infant, Jetpilot Cause Girls Infant, Jetpilot Cause Infant L50 Neo. Designed specifically for babies and toddlers. Some include a collar or headrest for additional head support. Junior — Follow Corp Junior, Rip Curl Omega Junior. For early primary-age kids. Youth and Kids — Rip Curl Dawn Patrol Boys and Girls, Jetpilot Freeride Boys and Girls, Jetpilot Cause Youth, Follow Global Youth, Wing Orbit Boys and Girls, Wing Realm Boys and Girls, Jetpilot Cause Boys and Girls, Ronix August Collard and Vision Collard. Primary-age through early teen. Teen — Ronix Prom Queen Teen, Ronix Drivers Ed Teen. Designed for teens before they move into adult sizes. L50 vs L50S applies to kids vests too. They have identical buoyancy (50N). The difference is water-type approval. L50 (PFD 2) is approved for smooth, partially smooth and open water on a PWC. Required safety colour. For kids riding behind a jet ski in open water. L50S (PFD 3) is approved for smooth water only. Any colour permitted. Most lakes, rivers and dams. Common for kids in towed water sports. A kid on a lake behind a boat needs at least an L50S. A kid on a PWC in open water needs an L50. Fit is critical, even more so than with adults. Very snug when dry. The vest should not slip up over the kid’s head when you pick them up by the shoulders of the vest — test this in the shop before buying. Always fasten both the zip AND the belt. Boys vs girls cuts. Many kids vests are gender-marked (Rip Curl Dawn Patrol Boys and Girls, Jetpilot Cause Boys and Girls, Wing Realm Boys and Girls) — usually for graphic and colour preference rather than fit difference. Pick based on what your kid likes and what fits properly. Care. Hand wash only with mild detergent. Never machine wash. Store away from heat and direct sun. Brand spread. Jetpilot has the deepest range, especially through the Cause family — covers infant through youth. Follow Corp range covers infant through junior. Rip Curl Dawn Patrol and Omega. Wing Realm and Orbit. Ronix carries the teen-specific cuts.
No — never. Adult vests are dimensioned for adult body proportions and even the smallest adult sizes are too big around the body for a kid. That means the vest rides up in the water (potentially over the head in a heavy fall) and doesn’t hold the kid in the right position. Sizing down doesn’t fix this — it’s a body-shape issue, not just a volume issue. Kids must be in kid-specific vests, sized to their weight bracket.
Size by weight, not by age — every product page lists the specific weight bracket for that vest. The age categorisation (infant, junior, youth, teen) is a rough guide, but kids of the same age can be wildly different sizes. Weigh your kid and match to the bracket on the product page. If your kid is between sizes, go up only if you can still get the fit snug with the zip and belt fastened; if not, go down.
Same distinction as adult vests — identical buoyancy (50N), different water-type approval. L50 is for PWC use and open or partially smooth water, and must be a high-vis safety colour. L50S is for smooth water (lakes, rivers, dams) and can be any colour. For most family boat use behind a tow on a lake, an L50S is the right call. If you’re putting your kid on a PWC in open water, you need the L50.
Very snug when dry. Fasten the zip AND the belt. Then pick your kid up by the shoulders of the vest — if the vest slips up past their ears or comes off over their head, it’s too loose and you need to go down a size or tighten further. The vest should stay put. Also check that your kid can move their arms freely to grab a handle or paddle. If you’re in the shop, do the shoulder-lift test before buying.
